Warnocks thundered down the steep mountain path.

Talons curled around a cliff edge, Levin kept his eyes on the dust cloud in the wake of hammering hooves, tracking the troop’s progress—descending straight into the valley, toward the strip of thick woodland set between towering mountain peaks. He scanned the vale, gaze skimming over the forest. A layer of thick fog rolled, rising between the treetops, obscuring the details, though…

He smelled the acrid magic.

“Fae,” Tempel murmured, scenting the acidity in the air.

Levin glanced up. “Ancient.”

Hanging horns down from a hundred feet up, Tempel raised a brow.

Levin drew another deep breath. “Not a hundred percent Fae, though.”

“Druids.”

“A lot of them.”

His friend bared a double row of serrated teeth. “Another clusterfuck. Just like in Savannah. Fae infrastructure overtaken by other Magickind.”

“Aye.”

“Makes you wonder what the fucking Fae are doing.”

Didn’t it, though?

A dominant race, the Fae commanded powerful magic. The kind that could tip the scales and unbalance the world. More than a match for a Dragonkind pack, which made other species speculate and rumors abound. Some said the ancient warrior race hated humankind so much, they’d found a way through the Ecotone (the magical veil between worlds), making their home in a parallel universe. Others insisted the Goddess of All Things had wiped them from the face of the earth.

No one knew for sure, but Levin sensed Fae magic everywhere in the valley. From craggy hollows and mountain peaks to the dead leaves littered across the forest floor.

Night vision pinpoint sharp, he leaned over the ledge, trying to get a better read. No dice. The magic-driven shield curving over the valley held tight, resisting his intrusion. No way for him to see through it unless he flew in for a closer look and—

A fist banged on ice. The rapid hammering raged behind him.

“Jesus,” Tempel muttered, tone full of amusement.

Shifting his weight from one paw to the other, Levin glanced over his shoulder. With a critical eye, he scanned the outside of the ice shield. Tucked against the mountainside. Hidden deep inside an invisibility spell. Excellent seal against jagged stone. Zero weakness in the outer shell. The perfect place to leave Priya while he investigated the mystery of the valley below.

A sensible solution. The only one that would ensure she stayed safe, well away from the danger, until he returned to take her home.

Not that she agreed with his methods.

On her feet behind the barrier, Priya pounded on the inside of the shield. Only with her left hand, though. The other she kept close, elbow bent, wrist up, plastic cast tucked against her chest.

An image of her crooked fingers rose in his mind’s eye.

Fury curled through him. Compassion arrived on its heels. Her discomfort cracked him open, making his heart ache and his mind burn. He wanted to take away her pain. Needed to soothe her so badly, he remained rooted to the cliff—torn between completing the mission and doing right by his mate.

Gaze glued to her blurry silhouette behind the layer of ice, Levin watched her hammer away one-handed.
